Three French hens…
But which breed? According to the BBC, there are four major breeds of French hens: Faverolles, La Fleche, Crevecoeurs and Marans. The most practical breed for winter gastronomie is the favorelle, which is a winter egg-laying machine. For those who are inclined to favor style over utility, the Marans is a groovy bird. Even that perennial epitome of cool, James Bond, couldn’t resist the Marans’ chocolate brown eggs.

Do such avian gifts generally come with a gift receipt? Because if my true love gave me such a present, I’d probably return or Craig’s List it by the next day. My true true love knows better. He knows the way to my heart is through my feet. Birds and trees are just fine, but new shoes are divine.
