Platforms: The Height of Fashion Across the Ages

As much as I adore Portland, there are times when I long to get out of town. After reading about the new exhibit on platform shoes at the Mint Museum of art in Charlottesville, I’m ready to hop on a plane to Crown Town.  I’m thinking it must be a great place to visit if they’re smart enough to offer up their museum to the shoe gods.  From April 25 through May 30th, the Mint Museum is displaying platforms from across the ages.  According to the museum’s flyer, platforms wooed fashion lovers  long before the upheaval of the 1960s:

Playful, Peeping Toes? Yes, Please!

The Northwest’s spring weather changes as often as an SNL cast member, alas and alack.  This week, Portland’s forecast has seen hail, rain, and sun– often in the same day.  With such changeable weather, I can’t very well bring out the summer sandals yet.  I’ve been yearning for the full-foot-exposure days of summer, when my feet will finally have the chance to  escape their (admittedly adorable) prison of fully-enclosed shoes.   Is there some middle road between winter boots and summer sandals?

The Perfect Sassy Summer Sandal

Although rain has returned to our damp clime, the perfect 70-degree weather earlier this week has me thinking about summer. All over Puddletown, magnolia and weeping cherry trees have burst into blossom, tulips and daffodils are swinging in spring breezes, and I can’t stop thinking about this summer’s delights.  How can I possibly wait another two months for fresh berries, swimming in the Sandy, and exhilarating hikes in the breathtaking Cascades?

Sasha: 'Thumbs up for J. Crew!' By John McNab.

After months of speculation among fashion writers, the Obamas exceeded high style expectations in sleek inaugural ensembles. Over the next four (or eight?) years, Michelle Obama will juggle multiple roles as mom, attorney, first lady, and trend-setter extraordinaire. Knowing the Obamas, she’ll pull it all of with a calm, gracious demeanor. Here at Shoeflyer, we’ll be following the first lady’s foot fashion, and keeping an eye on the catwalks to track her influence.
