A colleague recently pointed me to a New York Times blog post about Italian designer shoes. The shoes, from a third-generation company in Montegranaro, retail starting at $1,000 and up — way up, actually. In an economy that’s still working to get back on its feet, it was a little hard for me to understand how anyone could justify spending so much on a pair of shoes (heck, I would question the decision to spend that much money on shoes in a good economy, too). There was an article in the New York Times a couple weeks back heralding the return of white bucks – ivory-colored buckskin leather shoes with red rubber soles. The shoes were originally crafted for the game of tennis, however, now they’re more synonymous with country clubs and “preppies.” Personally, I think they’re one of the most worthless shoes ever designed. To use a baseball analogy, white bucks take three hard swings at practicality, relevance, and value, but end up striking out every time.

The news of Michael Jackson’s death has traversed the world with unequivocal speed, leaving many people shocked and saddened. Already, loyal fans have begun paying tribute to Jackson’s legacy – his music, fashion, and controversy – yet, amidst everything he’s known for, few knew that Jackson was also an innovative shoe designer, of sorts.
