Twelve Days of Shoe Shopping #12: Drummers/ Peggys

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Twelve drummers drumming…
which wouldn’t have been such a nonsensical gift when this song was first written down, in the late 1770s. At that time, drummers were more than just the backbone of any musical ensemble; they also played a vital role in warfare. On the battlefield, drummers set a marching pace. They accompanied parades and provided the drumroll of executions. Drums were so associated with military strength that in old English, “Tabert,” a great drummer, also meant a great king.
