FiveFinger Shoes: Barefoot Running for Better Posture

Classic Vibram FiveFingers shoe, in womens lilac/whiteOur hometown of Portland is obsessed with running. It’s nearly impossible to go anywhere in this city without seeing at least one jogger, even in our drizzle-icious winter months. Given how many Portlanders are passionate about running, it never takes long to see the latest running footwear trend pounding the PDX pavement.  I can’t wait to see some brave Portlander running around in the newest development in running technology:  barefoot running shoes.

Michelle Obama Dons Sporty-Chic Sneaks to Volunteer

Michelle Obama’s unique, down-to-earth yet fabulous approach to fashion has shoe lovers around the world drooling.  Last week, she stepped out in a pair of sweet Lanvin sneakers similar to the one shown at right.  (Ms. Obama’s pair, which she wore while volunteering at a food bank in Washington, DC, were grey with a pink toe and slightly less extravagant laces.) While the fashion critics are raving, others have voiced criticism regarding the appropriateness of wearing such expensive shoes to a charity event (a pair of sneaks from the French designer Lanvin usually run over $500). Regardless of how you feel about celebrities and conspicuous wealth, you have to admit that Ms. O is lookin’ good these days.  She’s spawned sites dedicated to following the First Lady’s fashion, including The Cut from the New York Times and Mrs. O, a blog.

Nude-Toned Shoes: Perfect For Summer

In a larger article about the fashion frustrations of professional women across the country, Forbes writer Laura Lipton suggests wearing slacks when it’s just too hot to wear pantyhose.  (After Michelle Obama mentioned on a visit to The View that she “stopped wearing pantyhose a long time ago,” I’m surprised anyone is still stuffing their legs into those sausage casings.) She also mentions common summer faux pas, including scaly skin, poorly maintained toenails, and cracked heels.  Aside from taking care of your feet, Ms. Lipton offers a wonderful tip for summertime footwear fashion:  Nude-Toned Shoes.

Agro-Shoes for the Workplace

Yesterday, we introduced a new player on the worldwide footwear fashion stage: the Aggressive Shoe.  Like many runway styles, the Agro-Shoe looks great on celebrities, models, and paper, but requires a little work to translate into everyday fashion.  If you work in a place that accepts punk-rock shoes with menacing studs, more power to you.  If, however, you must fuse fashion with a professional appearance, you’ll need an Aggressive Shoe that’s slightly less  in-your-face.  You need a subtle way to give it to The Man.  It must be so subtle that The Man might even dole out a compliment or two, completely unaware that what he admires is in fact a sign of secret rebellion.

Agro-Shoes: Sandals with an Attitude

It seems nearly every paper in America chose to run a recent AP story on the new aggressive style of shoe. I present article Exhibit A, from The News Tribune out of Tacoma.  This story is in online editions from Taiwan to Canada.  I congratulate AP writer Samantha Critchell for her global reach.    Ms. Critchell writes, “The ‘it’ bag has been replaced by the ‘it’ shoe, says Nicole Fischelis, the group vice president of ready-to-wear fashion for Macy’s. ‘The aggressive shoe is not a new phenomenon. It’s been on the runway for a few seasons, but it’s more apparent because of the rocker-chick kind of mood that’s coming back into fashion.’” Just what does an Aggressive Shoe look like, you ask?

Gladiator Sandals Popular at Australian Fashion Week

Australian Fashion week kicked off over the weekend, and reporters down under are focusing on the seriously downsized show. Since cost-cutting designers have pulled out of every other Fashion Week this year, it should come as no surprise that fewer designers chose to set up shop at Australian Fashion Week. Still, the success and surprising exuberance of the other shows around the world indicates that fashion is relevant and influential, even when spending is down. In response to consumer demands for higher-quality, long-lasting, “recessionista” pieces, designers are working hard to create fashion that’s more appropriate for the depressed world market.

Ahoy, Spring: Tips for Sporting Stripes

Tina by PareAs the UK’s Journal writer Liz Lamb highlights today, spring and summer designs usually include a touch of the nautical.  Stripes, bows, and funny little hats are as refreshing as the sea breezes, and such styles can definitely revive your wardrobe like a spell at the sea revived English sickies in the days of yore.  When incorporating eye-catching stripes in your ensembles, here are a few points to keep in mind: (more…)

The Era of Flowery Feet Begins: Shoes With Flowers

The spring is in full bloom here in Portland, and I’m still craving more blossoms.  I’m not alone.  Designers have dubbed this the “Season of the Flowers,” and if you ask me, there are few better places to place petals than at a beautiful woman’s feet–or on her shoes.    Yesterday, Baltimore Examiner writer Carole Langrall posted a great slideshow of flowery shoes on the runway.  Inspired by this lovely collection, I’ve gathered a few Shoefly pairs that feature flowers.  Enjoy, and may this spring mark your full blossoming into style!

Shoes For Tossing Over Telephone Wires

Chances are, you’ve seen shoefiti before.  From the United States to Peru to Israel to Romania, people all over the world practice “shoe tossing,” i.e. throwing shoes over telephone wires.  Just what does it mean when you spot sneakers or boots dangling from their laces?  Explanations for shoe flinging are as wide ranging as diverse as the flingers themselves.  If you ask a boy scout, he’ll say shoe flinging is part of summer camp.  Someone who lives in the inner city would likely have a very different response.  Shoes hanging from a wire are said to represent: (more…)
