Fit or Fab — You Choose

Have you heard of these new shoes yet? The ones that supposedly tone your calves and backside as you walk? The shoes are flip-flops called “Fit Flops” and are, apparently, a growing craze this summer. And with a marketing promise to firm your buns on the run, why wouldn’t they be? Though, I came across a telling news report today that uncovers the shoes might not be worth every penny you’re paying for them.

From Beach to Ballroom: A Wedding Shoe Dilemma

The quandary is inevitable. You’re attending (or in!) a wedding on the beach — sometime, somewhere, somehow –  and a reception with dancing in a ballroom is scheduled to follow. Now, of course, you realize the dilemma. Your pair of Joy Chen pumps that perfectly compliment your stunning black cocktail dress are not exactly beach-friendly. At the same time, the fabulous flip-flops you’d normally wear in the sand aren’t exactly going to cut it on the dance floor. Great. What now?!

Shoe Shopping Tips

LadonnaI came across this article the other day about tips for shoe shopping. Normally, I’m skeptical of these types of articles since most anybody can offer a few general pointers that end up sounding more like common sense that legitimate suggestions. I was surprised, however, to find the author really did her research, including visiting a podiatrist for some expert advice. As a result, she came away with some pretty handy tips that even an old shoe-shopping pro like myself thought useful. Here’s a taste of what you should be aware of the next time your shopping for that perfect pair of soles, courtesy Rosalie Robles Crowe: (more…)

How to Protect Your Feet at the Beach

It’s been quite a while since humans had feet tough enough to withstand the natural environment. Our ancestors’ feet were huge, hairy, and hard.  Ancient humans could withstand the pressure of walking barefoot on hard surfaces thanks to a tough layer of built-up callouses.  Now, because they are almost always protected by shoes, our feet are soft, narrow, and offer very little protection against the natural environment.  As beach season approaches, it’s important to know how to protect your feet when you do decide to go sans footwear. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind at the beach, via the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons: (more…)

Five Fab Summer Shoes for the Office

3394749911_50a9003b8b_mIt’s gorgeous outside; sunny, with a tantalizing sea breeze from the Southwest.  Your mind waders to the beach, the river, or the mountains.  But you’re tragically trapped at work, and the amazing weather makes you want to bang your head against your cubicle’s padded walls. Or you’re stuck in class, desperately trying to keep your mind on Socrates rather than sunshine. No one can make your unfortunate indoor time pass more quickly this summer, but a pair of perfectly formal summer flats from Shoefly might make it more enjoyable. Here are a few comfy-yet-presentable flats for your summertime work.

Making Gladiator Sandals Work for You

As summer looms on the horizon, every woman is pining for that perfect, trendy summer shoe — the gladiator sandal. The only problem: no one seems to know just exactly how to make these aggressive sandals compliment her legs. Fortunately, Karla Martinez, with the help of her co-workers and some trial and error, wrote an extremely helpful article about making gladiator sandals work.

Shoes on Show: UC Davis

Candela by Sam EdelmanI read today that the Design Museum at the University of California, Davis is hosting a footwear exhibit. Is it just me, or does exploring the history, influence, and impact of shoes seem to be a growing trend? As one curator of a shoe museum in Toronto puts it, shoes are a “really interesting stepping stone into larger cultural issues.”

Nothing to Fear About Sam Edelman’s Candela

sam_edelman_candelaWhat is your greatest fear – sharks, heights, embarrassment? Mine is snakes. Terrified of them. Quick shots of slithering serpents on TV cause me to fly into the other room in terror. I keep throw pillows on my couch, not for comfort as much as for shielding my eyes when I click past the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet.

Yamamoto Brings Red-Hot Shoes to Paris Fashion Week

The Parisians certainly know how to end things with a bang. This week marks the beginning of Paris Fashion Week, the final leg of the worldwide metropolitan fashion showcases for the season. So far, the designs on Paris’ catwalks have seemed to fly in the face of inevitable financial cutbacks, almost as if designers are rebelling against economic limitations.
