Get Ready, Get Green

BV2009That’s right, green – and no, we’re not talking environmentally-friendly — just the color. Green is on its way back and already surfacing among some shoe designers, at least, that’s what our friends at The Shoe Dish are saying. While they concede, however, that we won’t see the color’s popularity in full force until next spring, hints of the fashion trend will be appearing throughout the fall and winter. And when spring does get here, Shoefly wants you at the forefront of fashion instead of trying desperately to catch up. Here are a few ways for you to set the trend, not just follow it.

“Spring” Ahead — way ahead.

springPerhaps a tad premature, Shoeflyer’s got an inside scoop on next spring’s fashion trends. While some may say it’s too early to be thinking about fashion that far off, I think it’s our duty here at Shoeflyer to keep you informed and current on the latest developments in the world of shoes. Even though next spring is several months (and seasons) away, it’s never too early to begin preparing, especially in order to keep your eyes open for great deals during the off seasons. So, what exactly do we know?

What do more women want more than ever?

Bild 183-M1129-321Bigger shoes. At least, that’s what this article said last week about Chicago women and their supposed larger-than-average feet. Apparently, a retail department store surveyed local women and discovered an overwhelming call for more double digit-sized shoes in stock. As a result, the store began showing the bigger-sized shoes on the sales floor and noted that women were buying multiple pairs — they’d finally found a shoe their size. And you can, too.

Local “Shoe Lady” Celebrates 25 Years at Store

Earlier this month, Peggy Spencer celebrated her 25th year working with shoes at a department store in Iowa. She first started way back in 1984 (a year that I personally remember because, well, that’s the year I was born) and has since become one of three managers in the store. To her friends, she’s just Peggy, but to the majority of customers who happen her way, she’s known as “The Shoe Lady.” In fact, Spencer even admits to often hearing the phrase “There’s the shoe lady” from time to time. When I first read this story, I knew that I wanted to share it with you because one, I still can’t believe this lady has been selling the same shoes almost everyday of my entire life, and two, I think it’s a great accomplishment to faithfully serve in one place for so long. Just for fun, I put together a little something as a tribute to the Shoe Lady of Iowa…

Rollasoles: Dance Club Rx for your Tootsies

Every once in a while, a new idea changes the way you think.  Today, I’d like to feature one such idea:  Rollasoles.  As the video here shows, Rollasoles are shoes that can be bought from vending machines, mostly in dance clubs.  Matt Horan, the 27-year-old inventor of Rollasoles, came up with the idea after noticing the intense pain his lady friend suffered from dancing in stilettos.  Like a true knight-in-entrepreneurial-armor, he designed a pair of flats that can fit into your purse. Okay, by his own admission, he was mostly spurred by his girlfriend’s complaints, but still, I imagine that quite a few damsels-in-footwear-distress have been saved by Mr. Horan’s invention.

One Hundred Year Feet — er, Feat!

A local shoe retailer in Fremont, Michigan will celebrate its centennial mark this coming September, according to a local newspaper. Vredeveld Shoes opened September 9, 1909 and has been serving its community by selling shoes ever since. The current owner, Lon Vredeveld, is the great-grandson of the shoe store’s original owner — meaning the store has seen four generations at its helm. As a result, the store is filled with all kinds of shoe-related antiques — so many, in fact, Vredeveld plans to start a mini-museum on the second floor of the store. Like many other businesses though, Vredeveld Shoes has suffered at the hand of the economy, but Lon still sees hope in the future. “We’re not getting to 100 years and stopping,” he told the paper. And I must say, an 100 year-old independent shoe retailer is an impressive accomplishment. Now, if only shoes would last that long

These Shoes Were Made for [Pack]ing

AdaHave you ever stared, frustrated, at an open and overly-stuffed suitcase while holding a pair (or two) of shoes you’ve unsuccessfully fit inside? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself in this very situation, outfits planned and packed, yet requiring more shoes than I can possibly take. Thankfully, after some thought and a little research, I learned a few things about packing shoes effectively.

Gladiator Sandals for Hayden Panettiere

Hayden PanettiereWe knew gladiator sandals would be hot this summer, but Hayden Panettiere is making them sizzle. The Heroes star was recently seen wearing a pair of black gladiators during a guest appearance on David Letterman’s Late Show where she was promoting her new movie, “I Love You, Beth Copper.” Her (seriously) little black dress may have contributed (slightly) to her overall appearance, but we all know it’s the shoes that complete the package. If you’re looking to perfectly compliment a little black dress of your own, Shoefly has all the answers.

Is barefoot better?

free2Care for a brisk, barefoot jog, anyone? I recently read a fascinating article about barefoot marathon running. Apparently, running shoeless is the new craze. Still, while running barefoot may be the latest athletic breakthrough, “going shoeless” certainly isn’t fashion-forward when it comes to the hottest trends — even during the summer. Do you know what is?
