I read somewhere this week that the only things recession-proof were wine and condoms. Go figure. Though, the author did also make a convincing argument for women’s shoes. In fact, she wrote of a woman who owned 90 pairs of shoes — obviously not in need of any more — making a conscious effort to cut back on her spending during a troubled economy. Despite her lofty aims, however, she’s admittedly still in the market for more shoes. And her only excuse: shoes are the one thing you have to look at all day — everything else needs a mirror. Brilliant, if you ask me. Now, about my next pair of shoes…

Today, a company called Brilliant Widgets announced its new product — “Shoe Socks” — which they claim are “the world’s first form-fitting stretchable protective shoe covers.” Apparently, the purpose of this innovation is two-fold: while traveling, one) they prevent dirt and germs on your shoes from getting onto the rest of your luggage, and two) they also protect your shoes from all the hazards a suitcase or duffel has to offer (you know — real socks, underwear, and t-shirts).

It’s gorgeous outside; sunny, with a tantalizing sea breeze from the Southwest. Your mind waders to the beach, the river, or the mountains. But you’re tragically trapped at work, and the amazing weather makes you want to bang your head against your cubicle’s padded walls. Or you’re stuck in class, desperately trying to keep your mind on Socrates rather than sunshine. No one can make your unfortunate indoor time pass more quickly this summer, but a pair of perfectly formal summer flats from Shoefly might make it more enjoyable. Here are a few comfy-yet-presentable flats for your summertime work.

When incorporating eye-catching stripes in your ensembles, here are a few points to keep in mind: (more…)

The spring is in full bloom here in Portland, and I’m still craving more blossoms. I’m not alone. Designers have dubbed this the “Season of the Flowers,” and if you ask me, there are few better places to place petals than at a beautiful woman’s feet–or on her shoes. Yesterday, Baltimore Examiner writer Carole Langrall posted a great slideshow of flowery shoes on the runway. Inspired by this lovely collection, I’ve gathered a few Shoefly pairs that feature flowers. Enjoy, and may this spring mark your full blossoming into style!

Her writing gig and seemingly unlimited credit allowed Carrie Bradshaw to spend $40,000 on shoes, but I must limit my shoe habit to my bank account. As much as I adore seeing my own feet outfitted in strappy Monolos, I also hate seeing my savings dwindle while my credit card bills rise. Is there a happy compromise? Is it possible to satisfy such intense shoe cravings while controlling spending?
