“Spring” Ahead — way ahead.

Perhaps a tad premature, Shoeflyer’s got an inside scoop on next spring’s fashion trends. While some may say it’s too early to be thinking about fashion that far off, I think it’s our duty here at Shoeflyer to keep you informed and current on the latest developments in the world of shoes. Even though next spring is several months (and seasons) away, it’s never too early to begin preparing, especially in order to keep your eyes open for great deals during the off seasons. So, what exactly do we know?

Well, according to a source at Footwear News, one predicted hot trend for Spring ‘10 is braided sandals. That is, sandal straps that boast braids will be a popular item by the time next season comes around. And there’s even still time to style a pair or two as the end of summer slowly tapers off — before fall becomes a legitimate threat to the sandals we all love to sport.

Prom Shoes: Go Big or [Stay] Home

I read an article today about a man who took his daughter prom shoe shopping. Actually, he took his whole family. Needless to say, his candid observations of his wife and two daughters shopping were humorous, to say the least. At first, he wasn’t exactly keen on the experience and likened his wife and daughters to lionesses on the hunt. In the midst of his attempt to reconcile the whole process, however, he had an epiphany:

If clothes make the man, then surely shoes make the woman. And with the perfect pair of heels on her feet, my daughter was ready to make her mark that night, literally putting her best foot forward. Sometimes it’s really worth it to pull out all the stops instead of finding ways to do things on a shoestring, even in these difficult economic times. And a senior prom is something you remember forever.

The author’s conclusion reminded me that sometimes you do have to treat yourself (or, in his case, someone you love). When once-in-a-lifetime opportunities arise, there’s no question you’ll remember them for the rest of your life. The real question is: will you celebrate or regret them? Though shoes may be a small part of the whole experience, they are an important piece to completing the entire picture.

A recent article observed a growing fashion trend among graduates attending commencement ceremonies. While graduates are typically all expected to dress uniform in the traditional grad garb (black cap and gown), now they’re taking advantage of the only thing they can to stand out: their shoes. Many students are choosing to sport bright and bold shoes to attract attention and make a statement. If you’re headed to a graduation ceremony this weekend, expect to see anything from flamboyant beach-going footwear to brand-new colorful court sneakers with matching laces to red satin peep-toe pumps with a bow. Ahoy, Spring: Tips for Sporting Stripes

As the UK’s Journal writer Liz Lamb highlights today, spring and summer designs usually include a touch of the nautical. Stripes, bows, and funny little hats are as refreshing as the sea breezes, and such styles can definitely revive your wardrobe like a spell at the sea revived English sickies in the days of yore. When incorporating eye-catching stripes in your ensembles, here are a few points to keep in mind:

Practice Stripe Moderation. Stripes are quite bold, so they should be used sparingly. A stripey piece or two is usually enough–don’t go overboard. (Har de har har.)
Stripe, Meet Solid. One way to balance stripes is to pair them with a block color. Liz Lamb recommends pairing a striped t-shirt with jeans, or a vertically striped skirt with a solid top.
Vertical Stripes are Slimming. Maybe your Mom’s already hammered this rule into your head, but just in case… avoid horizontal stripes unless want to highlight a certain area. If you’d like your hips to seem a little wider, slap some horizontal stripes there. Otherwise, opt for vertical stripes, or flashes of stripes in small doses.
