Shoes for the Office and Beyond

On these long summer days, it’s imperative to have versatile footwear.  After all, you never know when a Tweet or Facebook status update will clue you into a super-hip after-hours event.  Rather than carry around your clubbing shoes, why not marry work and play in a single pair of kicks?  I have a few tips for finding the perfect pair of shoes to transverse your roles as laborer and party animal: (more…)

Five Fab Summer Shoes for the Office

3394749911_50a9003b8b_mIt’s gorgeous outside; sunny, with a tantalizing sea breeze from the Southwest.  Your mind waders to the beach, the river, or the mountains.  But you’re tragically trapped at work, and the amazing weather makes you want to bang your head against your cubicle’s padded walls. Or you’re stuck in class, desperately trying to keep your mind on Socrates rather than sunshine. No one can make your unfortunate indoor time pass more quickly this summer, but a pair of perfectly formal summer flats from Shoefly might make it more enjoyable. Here are a few comfy-yet-presentable flats for your summertime work.

Nude-Toned Shoes: Perfect For Summer

In a larger article about the fashion frustrations of professional women across the country, Forbes writer Laura Lipton suggests wearing slacks when it’s just too hot to wear pantyhose.  (After Michelle Obama mentioned on a visit to The View that she “stopped wearing pantyhose a long time ago,” I’m surprised anyone is still stuffing their legs into those sausage casings.) She also mentions common summer faux pas, including scaly skin, poorly maintained toenails, and cracked heels.  Aside from taking care of your feet, Ms. Lipton offers a wonderful tip for summertime footwear fashion:  Nude-Toned Shoes.

Thirteen Thursday: 13 Killer Eggplant-Colored Must-Haves

It’s no surprise that retailers across the country are attempting to lure people into stores with splashes of color. The economic and climactic winter have some designers playing it safe with black, gray, and white, but that can’t last for long–color is just too much fun. Macys’ windows here in downtown Portland proclaim, “Welcome back color,” and feature color schemes of black, white, and one punchy color, like tequila sunrise orange. My favorite grouping shows a lovely swirl of cerulean blue, black, and eggplant. That touch of dark purple eggplant is perfect for the present economic environment—it’s not as irrationally perky as pink or orange, but it still allows a sense of style and mystery into the otherwise basic spring color schemes. And so, in hopes that in some small way this post will lead more designers to feature dark and dusky eggplant tones, here are thirteen examples of hot new eggplant-colored fashion.

NY Fashion Week: Some Designers Drop Out, Others Cut Costs

Given the internationally depressed economy, it’s no surprise that three designers, including Vera Wang, decided to pull out of fashion week in New York.  Fashion Week is a glitzy, expensive affair requiring gobs of investment on the part of the designers. Those who are participating are finding ways to cut costs. Some brought fewer models. Others are requiring guests to bring their own libations to the after parties.

Shoes of the Week: Weird Thursday

Thursday is a very strange day, indeed. If you’re like me, you head home after work and find every attempt to stay productive thwarted by your own favorite distractions. The weekend is so tantalizingly close that it becomes difficult to do the simplest chores, like paying the phone bill. Why do such menial tasks when the weekend is just hours away?

Shoe Fairy Tales: Cinderella

Shoes have long represented wealth and power, thanks to one universal truth: the more uncomfortable the shoe, the richer the wearer.

Princess-worthy pumps

Those who can afford to be carried often sport the most bizarre shoes, while those who labor for a living have little choice but to wear more practical footwear. Shoes also indicate wealth on a statistical level: if you own two pairs of shoes, you’re wealthier than half of the world’s population*.
