Celebrate Your Fashion Freedom with Fabulous Footwear

3012693543_cd4642908d_mAn excellent article on fashion in Baghdad has me feeling blessed to be able to express my inner diva.  In their article, “What Not to Wear, Baghdad-Style: Fashion Rules Begin To Change,” Timothy Williams and Abeer Mohammed provide an excellent overview of just how much has changed in Baghdad in recent years.  After the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, clerics set strict rules about how Iraqi women could dress.  Women who did not wear body-covering, full-length abayas were threatened, kidnapped, or even killed by armed militia members.  As one woman interviewed in the article explained, “Militias did not want women’s bodies to be visible, because they thought it might charm men.” Even women who wore full-sleeve shirts and long slacks were targeted by militia, so women across the city erased themselves into cloak-like abayas. Thankfully, as the city has stabilized in recent months, a small group of young women have been brave enough to exchange their abayas for styles of their own choosing. Mini-skirts and Mary Janes are appearing across the city.

The Shoes of the MTV Music Awards

golden-craftyJudging from the shoe selections at this year’s MTV Music Awards, you’d think the year’s top film was Gladiator. Of course, these gladiators were a little less practical than the shoes worn in the Russell Crowe film.  A veritable milky way of starlets opted for ankle-binding dominatrix-style gladiators, some with tiny stiletto heels. If you ask me, too many toes were sticking out over the edges of those Amazon-lady shoes. I’ll leave it to others to evaluate who pulled off the ubiquitous gladiator trend–here are a few MTV Music Awards Fashion Kudos you won’t see anywhere else.

Shoe Rental: Try Before You Buy

One upside to the dismal economy: an increase in national creativity.  Across the country, consumers are taking creative approaches to obtaining fashionable footwear. Some are taking their old favorites to repair shops, rather than shelling out precious greenbacks for new kicks. Others are swapping clothes and accessories with friends, as the Associated Press recently highlighted in an article titled “Squeezed by Economy, Shoppers become Swappers.” Still others are turning to an age-old technique for preserving limited funds: rental. As highlighted in the video at below, Maggie Snow and Shannon Valitzek, sisters hailing from Boise, Idaho, are offering consumers a chance to save both the earth and a few bucks by renting formal shoes out of their store, One Night Stand.

Heels: love ‘em. Sore feet: not so much…

Felt Spot by F TroupeWe’ve all been there, haven’t we, ladies? Up on your feet, dancing the night away, enjoying the moment and looking good while doing it. After it’s all said and done, however, there’s only one thing you’re thinking about…getting out of those extremely trendy but extremely uncomfortable designer heels. The only problem? You didn’t bring another pair of shoes. Even if you’d thought about it, there’s no place to keep them. And let’s face it: your comfy slippers or tennis shoes aren’t exactly fashion forward. Shoefly’s solution?

Agro-Shoes for the Workplace

Yesterday, we introduced a new player on the worldwide footwear fashion stage: the Aggressive Shoe.  Like many runway styles, the Agro-Shoe looks great on celebrities, models, and paper, but requires a little work to translate into everyday fashion.  If you work in a place that accepts punk-rock shoes with menacing studs, more power to you.  If, however, you must fuse fashion with a professional appearance, you’ll need an Aggressive Shoe that’s slightly less  in-your-face.  You need a subtle way to give it to The Man.  It must be so subtle that The Man might even dole out a compliment or two, completely unaware that what he admires is in fact a sign of secret rebellion.

Agro-Shoes: Sandals with an Attitude

It seems nearly every paper in America chose to run a recent AP story on the new aggressive style of shoe. I present article Exhibit A, from The News Tribune out of Tacoma.  This story is in online editions from Taiwan to Canada.  I congratulate AP writer Samantha Critchell for her global reach.    Ms. Critchell writes, “The ‘it’ bag has been replaced by the ‘it’ shoe, says Nicole Fischelis, the group vice president of ready-to-wear fashion for Macy’s. ‘The aggressive shoe is not a new phenomenon. It’s been on the runway for a few seasons, but it’s more apparent because of the rocker-chick kind of mood that’s coming back into fashion.’” Just what does an Aggressive Shoe look like, you ask?

Gladiator Sandals for the Guys & Dolls Crowd

As lame as it sounds, sometimes I miss high school.  My selective memory has apparently banished all of the painful memories of judgmental cliques, because I just remember geeking out with all the drama nerds.  Never one to fade into the background, I soon found my crew of divas, techies, and dramaturgs.  Thanks to the magic of Facebook, I can still keep in touch with these ebullient thespians.  I think I’ll post A. Marinelli’s Doll gladiator sandal for my long-distance drama buddies. I’ve yet to find a gladiator sandal with more flair.

iShoes: Endless Shoe Shopping Is Here!

How many times a day do you think about shoes?  If you’re like me, you almost never stop thinking about shoes– checking out others’ footwear, scoping out the shop windows, and admiring my own stylish choices certainly takes up a good chunk of my time.  But there’s so much wasted time– when I’m staring out the bus window, standing in line, or waiting for lunch to arrive — when I could be shoe shopping.  Well, with the advent of Apple’s iShoes application, I can now maximize my precious shoe shopping time, regardless of location.

Russian Fashion Week: It’s a Jungle Out There

The worldwide financial crisis has hit Moscow hard. Once known as a city of opulence where luxurious SUVs battled for space on designer-boutique lined avenues, Moscow’s prime real estate is increasingly feasible only for discount stores. Profits from luxury goods are expected to plummet by a third this year, and the Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen storefronts in Moscow are now empty, after only 18 months in business. Still, the fashion show must go on.

Michelle Obama Chooses Black Flats & Kitten Heels for Europe

At times, Michelle Obama’s fashion choices threatened to outshine the political purpose behind the Obamas’ recent diplomatic trip across Europe.  If you’ve been as pleasantly distracted by Ms. Obama’s fashion faceoff against the world’s post powerful divas as I have, you’ve probably noticed her sleek, subtle, comfortable footwear. I’m not alone in rejoicing that the First Lady is both fashionable and real.
