The Heelless Boot Is a Star at Paris Fashion Week

I thought the heel-free boot was condemned to the footnotes of fashion history after Victoria Beckham couldn’t walk more than thirty feet in them. Judging by the examples at Paris Fashion week, I was wrong. Heelless boots are apparently still in style—at least if you ask designers like Olivier Theyskens. His final show for Nina Ricci had models strutting down the catwalk on their tiptoes, staring stoically straight ahead, probably because their full focus was required to actually walk in those things.

Thirteen Thursday: 13 Blue and/or Suede Shoes

Historically speaking, March 5th is a great day to wear army boots or blue suede shoes, since on this date in 1960, Elvis Presley was discharged from the army after finishing his two-year stint in Germany.  The King wasn’t exactly roughing it in the army– he lived off-base, surrounded by family and friends.  Still, he completed his duty at a pivotal point in his career, spending two years away from a nation of swooning teenage girls that couldn’t get enough of the 20-something heart-throb from Mississippi.  So on this day when Elvis traded in his army-issue Big Boots for his old Blue Suede Shoes, Shoeflyer is featuring blue suede shoes. And since it’s Thursday, why not make it a baker’s dozen?

Happy Birthday, Benicio– Sell it! Strut it! Love it!

Shoeflyer wishes steamy Puerto Rican actor Benicio Del Toro a very happy 42nd birthday. Not that he needs our well wishing. The stars seem to have aligned for this film star. Not only did he land the role of one of history’s most influential politicians (Che), but he will strut his stuff today on the catwalks of New York’s Fashion Week.

Happy Paraskavedekatriaphobia Day: Shoes for Friday the 13th.

Friday the 13th is a day long associated with strange happenings and bad luck.  This is the worst day of the year for paraskavedekatriaphobics, who suffer from a fear of Friday (in Greek, paraskevi) the 13th (dekatreis). Why fear a superstition that’s only been on written record since the 1900s?  Well, numerology provides one reason.  Twelve is considered a complete number in numerology, since there are twelve months in the year, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve apostles, twelve hours on clocks, twelve gods of Olympus, and so forth.  Thirteen seems odd and out of place after such a complete number.

Grammys Shoe Fashion: Gladiator Sandals, Bland Pumps, or Platforms

The Grammys have come and gone, and aside from lamenting the continuation of the pattern that the winners are those who are best suited for elevator music, we’re reviewing the celebrities’ attempt to put their best foot (and shoes) forward.

Must-Have First Lady Fashion: Go Green With Michelle Obama

Sasha: 'Thumbs up for J. Crew!' By John McNab.

After months of speculation among fashion writers, the Obamas exceeded high style expectations in sleek inaugural ensembles. Over the next four (or eight?) years, Michelle Obama will juggle multiple roles as mom, attorney, first lady, and trend-setter extraordinaire. Knowing the Obamas, she’ll pull it all of with a calm, gracious demeanor. Here at Shoeflyer, we’ll be following the first lady’s foot fashion, and keeping an eye on the catwalks to track her influence.

2008 in Review: Strange Ending and Epilogue

Welcome to the Pre-New-Year-Lame-Duck-Slump of 2008. The last few days before any long-awaited event are always a little strange. I can’t remember a single thing about the days leading to my college graduation, except that I walked around in a hurried daze.

Ugly Shoe of the Week: Yoga Punk from Annejet Kosters

Today’s ugly shoe choice: lace-up combat boots fit for an anarchist Egyptian princess. What other climate or lifestyle would allow such silly footwear?

Evidence that experimental does not equal pretty or even wearable.
