Keeping Your Kicks Klean

N5 by PF FlyerEveryone has that pair of shoes they love to wear all the time. You know the ones — a tad weathered but ultra comfy and still stylin’. It’s that pair of shoes you wish would last forever, but sadly (unless you had enough foresight to buy six pairs), they’ll eventually wear out and end up getting the boot, so to speak. At the same time, don’t we all have that pair of shoes we’ve made a significant investment in? The ones we hardly ever wear but tread on like they’re made of glass when we do? With all our soles inevitably wearing thin, how do we maximize the life and investment of our shoes?

NEW: Men’s Designer Shoes

Shoefly recently launched the new men’s designer shoe department on its web site. Shoefly Guy carries only the hottest styles of shoes, featuring designers like Camper, Pawelks, Ryan Rowe, PF Flyer, and many more. To celebrate the new addition to Shoefly, here are a few of my personal favorites so far: (more…)

Even Kathy Griffin understands the importance of shoes…

Bianca by Camper…and she’s a self-proclaimed “D-list” celebrity. In fact, Griffin knows the power of stylish shoes so well, she’s enlisted the aid of a personal stylist in her quest to achieve “A-list” status. A recent interview in Footwear News gives readers an in-depth look into Griffin’s arsenal of shoes as well as discloses the comedian’s weaknesses when it comes to footwear fashion — you wouldn’t know she struggles with shoes though, at least, not if you saw her floor-to-ceiling closet full of them. Still, with the help of her stylist, Griffin is able to wade the waters of celebrity fashion, including leaving readers with a few tongue-and-cheek tips along the way.

Celebrate Your Fashion Freedom with Fabulous Footwear

3012693543_cd4642908d_mAn excellent article on fashion in Baghdad has me feeling blessed to be able to express my inner diva.  In their article, “What Not to Wear, Baghdad-Style: Fashion Rules Begin To Change,” Timothy Williams and Abeer Mohammed provide an excellent overview of just how much has changed in Baghdad in recent years.  After the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, clerics set strict rules about how Iraqi women could dress.  Women who did not wear body-covering, full-length abayas were threatened, kidnapped, or even killed by armed militia members.  As one woman interviewed in the article explained, “Militias did not want women’s bodies to be visible, because they thought it might charm men.” Even women who wore full-sleeve shirts and long slacks were targeted by militia, so women across the city erased themselves into cloak-like abayas. Thankfully, as the city has stabilized in recent months, a small group of young women have been brave enough to exchange their abayas for styles of their own choosing. Mini-skirts and Mary Janes are appearing across the city.

Michelle Obama Dons Sporty-Chic Sneaks to Volunteer

Michelle Obama’s unique, down-to-earth yet fabulous approach to fashion has shoe lovers around the world drooling.  Last week, she stepped out in a pair of sweet Lanvin sneakers similar to the one shown at right.  (Ms. Obama’s pair, which she wore while volunteering at a food bank in Washington, DC, were grey with a pink toe and slightly less extravagant laces.) While the fashion critics are raving, others have voiced criticism regarding the appropriateness of wearing such expensive shoes to a charity event (a pair of sneaks from the French designer Lanvin usually run over $500). Regardless of how you feel about celebrities and conspicuous wealth, you have to admit that Ms. O is lookin’ good these days.  She’s spawned sites dedicated to following the First Lady’s fashion, including The Cut from the New York Times and Mrs. O, a blog.

Get Yer Michelle Obama Fashion Fix

A new president will take office on January 20th with a strong, intelligent, and imminently fashionable lady at his side. Michelle Obama seems confident that she’ll be comfortable in her new role as first lady, which includes influencing the nation’s approach to fashion. (Is that sexist?– I guess not, since Mr. Obama has done his share to influence men’s fashion.)
The Obamas’ “no drama” approach extends to Michelle’s wardrobe, which is sleek, comfortable, and glamorous without being pretentious.

How to judge a man by his shoes

The shoe-personality connection is well established in popular culture, at least for women. Just consider the number of shoe personality quizzes on the web. Everyone from Seventeen to offers a quiz to match your personality to a shoe. (Apparently, I’m laid back enough to be a flip-flop.) But does the shoe-personality connection also apply to men? If so, can a girl find her soulmate by analyzing his soles?

What stories do your shoes tell?

John Travolta’s shoes in “Saturday Night Fever” tell a story. Travolta’s strut is smooth, driven and cocky. His stride synchronizes perfectly with the Bee Gee’s “Stayin’ Alive.” Used in one of the earliest cross-marketing campaigns, those few moments of wordless cool shot Travolta and the Bee Gees to heady fame. My first encounter with this sequence left me demanding, “Who is this guy, and what (or who?) can’t he do?

A love letter to Camper style Bianca

Dear Bianca,

Thank you for the hours of comfortable wear yesterday.  Your glistening jewel tone set my heart a blaze and enticed me to purchase your sister in brown and black.  Before I met you I had no idea how intense a love for a platform could be.  Your rubber sole is as soft and supportive as my favorite tennis shoes, but gives me an extra 3 1/2″ of height.  I want to wear you everyday and have been tempted to even wear you on the treadmill.  Alas, I will simply have to get by with wearing you with everything else.

Summer is approaching quickly and it’s time to go camping. Stop! Don’t reach for for your tent and sleeping bag, we’re not taking a deep hike into the forest for an evening of bug bites and marshmallow roasting. Instead, we are announcing this week’s Sole Steal of the Week: the Catalina by Camper. Walk away from strap rash and blisters thanks to the cozy leather used for this sandal. The Catalina combines height and comfort to create this modestly unique and versatile wedged sandal.
