All this week at Shoeflyer, we’ll be reviewing and predicting shoe trends for this fall. Why so early? Partially because we like to be proactive. Also because, let’s face it, the stores are all going autumnal, too. (They’ll probably break out the Christmas stuff any day now…) And finally, I’m writing about fall shoes because the dog days of summer have me yearning for a crisp, refreshing fall. Apparently, Mike Dirnt, the bass player for Green Day, is also a shoe designer. No, I’m not joking, and yes, it’s all right to laugh (I did). Though, I suppose it’s not that surprising given the fact that countless celebrities regularly try their hand at fashion and style — everyone from legendary athletes like Michael Jordan to cutting-edge pop stars like Kanye West and now, I guess we can add Mike Dirnt to the list. According to Shoes4Souls, an international charity that provides free shoes to people in need, Dirnt (with some from MacBeth Footwear) has created a shoe called “45 RPM” from which any royalties he receives as a result of shoe sales will go directly to the charity.

The worldwide financial crisis has hit Moscow hard. Once known as a city of opulence where luxurious SUVs battled for space on designer-boutique lined avenues, Moscow’s prime real estate is increasingly feasible only for discount stores. Profits from luxury goods are expected to plummet by a third this year, and the Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen storefronts in Moscow are now empty, after only 18 months in business. Still, the fashion show must go on.
