Bigger shoes. At least, that’s what this article said last week about Chicago women and their supposed larger-than-average feet. Apparently, a retail department store surveyed local women and discovered an overwhelming call for more double digit-sized shoes in stock. As a result, the store began showing the bigger-sized shoes on the sales floor and noted that women were buying multiple pairs — they’d finally found a shoe their size. And you can, too.

Time to start writing the Shoeflyer post for today… I’ll just take a look around the web for shoe news… ho-hum, blah-de-blah—WHAT? FLIP-FLOPS ARE DEADLY? That’s right. Take a turn around Google News for yourself, and you’ll find no less than nine articles on the insidious danger of thongs for your feet, one titled “Warning: Flip Flops Can Kill You.” Local news stations across the country are dedicating hard-hitting journalists to this silent pedi-threat. Why are flip-flops so dangerous, you ask? Well…

Glitzy sandals: Vyper by Report
Welcome to the second installment of Shoeflyer’s exploration of fall shoe trends.
Yesterday, we welcomed back booties. Today, we’re glitzin’ it up with ornaments. I, for one, couldn’t be happier that glam rock seems to have invaded the shoe world. This is another trend that will stretch past this summer. Sequins, feathers, bows, and ruffles are here to stay, at least for one more season. To get in on the glam, look for luxurious,
Moulin Rouge-esque materials and eye-popping heels.

Have you heard of these new shoes yet? The ones that supposedly tone your calves and backside as you walk? The shoes are flip-flops called “Fit Flops” and are, apparently, a growing craze this summer. And with a marketing promise to firm your buns on the run, why wouldn’t they be? Though, I came across a telling news report today that uncovers the shoes might not be worth every penny you’re paying for them.

It’s been quite a while since humans had feet tough enough to withstand the natural environment. Our ancestors’ feet were huge, hairy, and hard. Ancient humans could withstand the pressure of walking barefoot on hard surfaces thanks to a tough layer of built-up callouses. Now, because they are almost always protected by shoes, our feet are soft, narrow, and offer very little protection against the natural environment. As beach season approaches, it’s important to know how to protect your feet when you do decide to go sans footwear. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind at the beach, via the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons: (more…)

The spring is in full bloom here in Portland, and I’m still craving more blossoms. I’m not alone. Designers have dubbed this the “Season of the Flowers,” and if you ask me, there are few better places to place petals than at a beautiful woman’s feet–or on her shoes. Yesterday, Baltimore Examiner writer Carole Langrall posted a great slideshow of flowery shoes on the runway. Inspired by this lovely collection, I’ve gathered a few Shoefly pairs that feature flowers. Enjoy, and may this spring mark your full blossoming into style!

As lame as it sounds, sometimes I miss high school. My selective memory has apparently banished all of the painful memories of judgmental cliques, because I just remember geeking out with all the drama nerds. Never one to fade into the background, I soon found my crew of divas, techies, and dramaturgs. Thanks to the magic of Facebook, I can still keep in touch with these ebullient thespians. I think I’ll post A. Marinelli’s Doll gladiator sandal for my long-distance drama buddies. I’ve yet to find a gladiator sandal with more flair.
