Get Yer Michelle Obama Fashion Fix

A new president will take office on January 20th with a strong, intelligent, and imminently fashionable lady at his side. Michelle Obama seems confident that she’ll be comfortable in her new role as first lady, which includes influencing the nation’s approach to fashion. (Is that sexist?– I guess not, since Mr. Obama has done his share to influence men’s fashion.)
The Obamas’ “no drama” approach extends to Michelle’s wardrobe, which is sleek, comfortable, and glamorous without being pretentious.

No surprise, then, that a number of bloggers have leapt at the chance to cover Mrs. Obama’s fashion. Our favorite so far is Mrs. O, a blog which promises to “Follow the Fashion of Mrs. O” and provide “regular look at who and what she’s wearing.”

Like Mrs. O, Shoeflyer will follow the first family’s fashion, especially Michelle’s fancy footwear. We hope Michelle will continue to choose styles and brands that are accessible to most American women, like the White House Black House dress she wore on The View. We’ll look for similar shoes that are popularly available, many on

Here’s Michelle on the campaign trail: comfortable, real, beautiful. Notice her choice of shoes. At 5’11″ by most estimates, Michelle’s flats keep her from towering over her 6’1″ husband. (In fact, when Barack is sworn in, Michelle will become the tallest First Lady ever.) These multi-earthy-jewel toned flats represent one of Michelle’s best fashion rules: Don’t Look Too Put Together. Her outfit is casually professional and would slide smartly into any business or PTA meeting. I love that it doesn’t annoyingly match his style– she’s her own strong person with her own unique color scheme.

Here are a pair of shoes that could have you feeling a little presidential: Twins Bombay by Camper. Pair these striped beauties with earthy tones, to bring out the subtle mauve in the middle.
