How to judge a man by his shoes

The shoe-personality connection is well established in popular culture, at least for women. Just consider the number of shoe personality quizzes on the web. Everyone from Seventeen to About.com offers a quiz to match your personality to a shoe. (Apparently, I’m laid back enough to be a flip-flop.) But does the shoe-personality connection also apply to men? If so, can a girl find her soulmate by analyzing his soles?

In her book, Never Trust a Man in Alligator Loafers, dating expert Donna Sozio claims you can. Sozio suggests that women carefully consider their crushes’ footwear choices for clues to his true personality. After all, unlike other popular predictors like astrology and numerology, we all choose our shoes. What he wears on his feet may indicate how he approaches life. Here are a few quick tips from the publisher’s description of Never Trust a Man in Alligator Loafers:

The Shoes: White Alligator Skin Extended-Toe Lace-Up Loafers
He says: I’ll call you.
His shoes say: At 3 A.M.

The Shoes: Suede Two-Toned Saddle Shoes
He says: Do you want to go to a movie?
His shoes say: But Mom wants me home by eleven.

Other tips, via Canoe.ca:

Material Considerations: All soft, scuffable shoes indicate he’s easily hurt. Alternatively, if his shoes are all made of rigid materials, he may try to hide and protect his true feelings.

Condition Considerations: If he takes care of his shoes, it’s likely that he also takes tender care of his loved ones.

Maintenance Considerations: Similarly, if a man grumbles about having to take care of his shoes, he’s unlikely to enthusiastically volunteer to lend you a hand.

Personally, I think my boyfriend’s shoes speak more about his past than his personality or his future. One of my favorite pairs of his shoes are Campers that he bought during his year in Spain. His Vans tell the world that he used to be a skater. And his muddy, broken in boots call to mind his landscaping business. I’m thinking of getting him the K70 Sues shown above for his current adventure: playing killer guitar in a rock band.

What do your sweetie’s shoes say about him?
