This one is just for fun.
The National Geographic Kids magazine set a Guinness World Record on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 when they tied more than 10,500 sneakers together by their shoelaces to create the longest chain of shoes. The final length measured 1.65 miles.
The magazine’s record setting fete was part of an overall initiative to encourage recycling. The sneakers will all be sent to Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program where they will be recycled into materials that can be used to build basketball courts and other athletic surfaces.
The shoes were collected from Girl and Boy Scout troops, schools and readers of the magazine. The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and Cameron Diaz also donated sneakers for the cause.
