In Jamie’s Shoes: Leaving the midwest behind…

Jamieprofilepic
I was in the beautiful, icy, snowy, windy, negative-4 degree weather of Madison, Wisconsin this past weekend.  Yes, I braved the Midwest winter I know all-too-well, and let me tell you, I know why I left!  I mean, the snow-topped trees and the rolling hills of white were pretty for a moment—a brief moment.  Then the reality of not wanting to leave a carbon-producing, skin-drying house became, how should I say this, depressing.

Needless to say, after arriving back home to Portland on a 55 and sunny day, I went straight to the beautiful and bountiful Gorge to enjoy the mountains and sunshine, leaving my down coat and Gor-tex boots behind.  Instead I climbed boulders and crested mountain tops in jeans and a zip-hoodie with my wine colored tennis shoes without wool socks.  And what a liberating feeling it was!

In Jamie’s Shoes: Off to Wisconsin she goes…

Jamieprofilepic
And so commenced the first warm-ish days of the year with the sun shining and the birds singing; happenings which only bear the song of even warmer days to come.  Though we still walk through the streets in our wool coats, they are there only to offset the chill of bare legs under our shortened skirts.  Of course we are still wearing boots with our skin baring legs, and wool sweater socks underneath the boots, but no one really needs to know that bit of info, do they?

Yes, today was my fourth day wearing such a variation of a theme, when my urban walk turned to a floating waltz and my puddle jumps became delicate leaps—my hair flowing buoyantly in the soft breeze behind me.  So why, I asked to the logic-Gods when I found myself packing my most chunky of sweaters and my most down-filled coats, did I decide to visit the frozen tundra of Madison, Wisconsin, for my dead of winter trip?  Oh, yes, that is because I love my family whom obviously has also not sought out the logic-Gods for answers to their chill-infused misery and simply moved from the great Midwest.

Will someone please remind me of my unconditional love for my family when I find myself picking the snow from the inside of my Farylrobin booties while shivering from the sub-zero temperatures?
