Weekend in Review-Shoes and News

For the Love of Sun, it’s absolutely beautiful here in Portland today and we must say, the warm and sunny fall weather is much deserved, as we’ve seen nothing but a wall of rain and clouds for… well, as long as we can remember. All that being said, here’s what happened in the land of shoes, fashion and random celebrity happenings. Enjoy:

  • Celebrities homeless—That was supposed to be a joke, mind you a bad and insensitive one at that.  However, as we type, wildfires are ravaging the home of celebrities and other less-famous wealthy people in Malibu, Calif.
  • Portland’s Fashion Week—It’s no Paris, New York, or even Los Angeles Fashion week, but, nonetheless, it’s a wonderful week for fashion here in Portland, Oregon. Widely know as a cultural epicenter of fashion and style pioneers, Portland is working it’s way onto the map of influential fashion cities. The aforementioned show began over the weekend with the kick-off of Portland’s very own fashion week.
  • TOMS: The people’s shoe of the year—Each year The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum awards one product design with the People’s Design Award. This year it was the simplistic style of TOMS brand shoes that took the show at the eight annual National Design Awards Gala.
Fashion design guru, Isaac Mizrahi, was on hand to present the award to TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie.

Weekend in Review-Shoes and News

As always, there’s no shortage of shoe and fashion news to report today. Sure, none of our headlines top the week-long heat wave causing difficulties in the Midwest and and East; but it’s exciting news never-the-less. Enjoy:

  • Samsonite shoes? For serious?—Samsonite, the leader in the quality luggage and travel accessories, has announced a diversification strategy to enter into the designer shoe market. Is it a good idea? Probably not, but what do we know? However, we’ll believe it when we see it.
  • Foot pain: More serious that you think—Is the pain caused as a result of cramming your feet into heels and stilettos normal? Probably, but it’s not exactly safe and it can, in fact, become more serious than one might think. Furthermore, foot pain is nothing to put on the back burner, as it can be a sign of something more serious.
  • Say no to sweat suits—At least that’s what Veronica Webb, co-host of Bravo TV’s new show, "Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style" says. In short, the only time a sweat suit is acceptable is when going to or returning from the gym. Other than the aforementioned occasions, if you’re wearing a sweat suit you’re basically saying, "I give up."
  • Paris Fashion Week round-up—Vouge Online covers the events of Paris Fashion Week in full detail. If you thought the designs showcased during the U.S. edition edition of fashion week were odd, then you’ve seen nothing yet.

Weekend in Review-Shoes and News

Good Monday, friends. After a weekend full of chilly wind and icy cold rain, fall is without question in full effect. That being said, time to pick out a fresh pair of Wellies and make sure your umbrella’s in working order. Now cozy up in your office, cubicle, coffee shop or, if you’re lucky, the comfort of your own home and enjoy this week’s shoe and fashion news review:

  • A love affair in pairs— Woman and shoes, they go together like peas & carrots, peanut-butter & jelly, Bonny & Clyde… you get the point. As Paola Jacobbi of NY News Daily explains, "Our intimate relationship with shoes begins shortly after we learn to
walk. As soon as we want to feel "grown-up," we slip on a pair of our
mother’s high heels, instantly heightening our sense
of what it means to be female." Now, with a myriad of shoe styles from a plethora of designers, shoe shopping has never been more fun—or challenging.

  • Booties are back— Don’t worry, we are not talking about what’s in your "trunk," instead, we are talking about the revitalization of the ever-so-popular 1980s "short boot." Booties (or shooties to some) are flying off the shelves faster than the new Backstreet Boys album.

Our verdict: short boots + zipper or buckle = hot, hot, hot.

  • Burberry’s back, too— It’s hard to believe Burberry (circa 1850s) came back into style more than 10 years ago, then departed from the designer fashion forte a few years later. As longtime fans of Burberry we’re happy to hear it’s once again "IN. "
