Good things come to good people

All it takes is some patience, a smile, and maybe even a
bit of humor to make an uncomfortable situation a bit more comfortable. Well, maybe being human is all it takes. After all, we only act animalistic some of
the time … other than that, we are an alright species—too bad we choose to concentrate on the negative. Oh, what a dramatic society! Good thing we have cute blogs like Shoeflyer
to bring the positive back into the human experience, which leads me to my story.

I went to my neighborhood Anthropologie the other day to
return some shorts I bought online. I
should actually have known better than to attempt to buy anything belonging on the lower half of my body online. We
all know about my well endowed tushe that always seems to make its way into my
columns. What I’m saying is that it’s big! Which is why I should never buy any pants or shorts online
because they never fit. In the end, I always return the bottoms to the store and get all my money back, except for the
shipping, of course.

So, there I stood at the counter, reluctantly handing the
sales woman two identical pairs of shorts, (yes, I even ordered
different sizes in hopes that one would fit, but no, neither fit, and yes, they
were plaid shorts with brown accents … still hunting). After a few minutes of not much happening,
accented by a few baffled looks from the cashier, she eventually called in a
manager, an adorable woman with the face of a 12-year-old, but must have been about my age, (I’ll talk about my tushe at will, but I’m a bit more protective
of my age) came over to assist. After fidgeting
and going through the same process as the cashier before her, there we stood in
the same place we had been five minutes prior. She smiled at me and said “Sorry for the wait. Something is wrong with our system.” I replied with a smile and a huge Wisconsin accent that always seems to come out at more
awkward moments; “Oh no! It’s
okay.” Hey, at least I didn’t say “Oh
no der, it okay der.” Cut me some slack.

After another five minutes of standing there with what
seemed to be no progress in the transaction, she looked at me again and said
with even more desperation in her voice; “I am really sorry this is taking so
long. It should only be another
minute.” I looked at her and pleasantly
replied “Really, it’s okay, I know this is out of your hands. Or maybe this is one of your clever
sales tactics; you have people wait in line for ‘your quirky system’ and tell
them to go browse around the store until your system has magically restored.
Then they come back to you with arms full of clothes and say ‘put this on my
tab.’ You are a  genius!” She replied with
a giggle, “Yeah, I guess that makes me a good sales manager!” We both laughed and proceeded to wait, and
wait, and wait.

About 20 minutes after my arrival, ‘the system’
finally let me return the unsuccessful purchases. As I was about to leave the store the manager
handed me a simple card; “Here, I don’t have any ‘official’ cards left, but I
wrote and explained everything on this one with my signature. It is for 10 percent off your next purchase. I truly appreciate your patience.”  I looked at her, smiled and said “thank
you.” She smiled back and I went on my

Now some people may think "well, that is what the sales
manager should have done!" And I could
have been angry about the wait and quite possibly have been handed the
same discount card due to the previously suggested “should have done”
philosophy. But there is a human quality in this scenario, and it is our
humanity which I am capitalizing on. After this experience I walked away with a really great feeling, as did
the sales manager. If I had huffed,
puffed and blown this scenario way out of proportion with a whole lot of audacity and not one bit of understanding, not only would the sales manager’s day have
gone awry, I would have walked out in a foul mood as well. Instead, I walked out with a discount and a
