Pre-emptive White Pants Wednesday Part 3: Rules Schmules!

Finally, we come to part 3 of my Pre-emptive White Pants Wednesday editorial. You’ll notice that we have now branded my weekly editorial In Jamie’s Shoes. So be sure to look for it every Wednesday. Yay!

On with the fashion rule farces! With the other
comparative ‘white fashion rule’ being “no white shoes after Labor Day,” I
began to think about when I can wear white? I
mean, that gives me a three month window to whip out the white clothing and
shoes when white is one of my best colors! No way! There has GOT to be a way
around this! Kendra had just the
solution. “Well, that’s what winter
whites are for.” I just need to vary my
whiteness; ivory and cream in winter and autumn, crisp white in the
summer.

Another myth which I continually break; so um, I guess
the pairing of black with brown is a big fashion ‘no no’? Really? Then what do you suppose I wear with my distressed brown leather Frye’s,
which are a fantabulous match with my American Apparel flowing black knit
skirt? Not to mention that I throw on a
brown knit top to carry on the black and brown theme separated by a layer of
off white. Oh! It doesn’t stop there! The boyish tank paired with the girly skirt
has to be a rule breaking strategy as well, right? I mean, these are just oxymoron’s flying
everywhere.

Another myth that I simply toss into the trash with
enthusiasm; “All parts in your outfit need to match.” Well, that is just wrong. How often do you see a lady across the street
wearing her dark gray outfit with a pair of red shoes and think; ‘shoot that
girls got style!’ That is what I am
talking about! A non-matching pair of
shoes can turn a seemingly boring outfit into one with vibrant panache! Throw in accents of black and white to your
dark gray and red shoes outfit just to emphasize the difference! Another
mismatched notion; take your typical black skirt and white top outfit and throw
on a pair of green shoes, go ahead! Watch you go from usual to exceptional by simply choosing something
different.

One myth I recently learned about from Monica, a co-shoe
reviewer on Shoeflyer, which took me by surprise as we were going off on this
frenzy of fashion insubordination. Monica said, “Never follow a revival of a
trend from an era that you already lived through.” Yeah Right! We both had to
laugh considering Monica passed this myth to me while she was rockin’ skinny
jeans and white boots with confidence and style. Can anyone say 1980’s?

Another fashion revert of the past is the geometric
design with vivid color of the 60’s and 70’s. This style is coming back with endearing vengeance with the likes of
designer Lisa Perry leading the way. I
can again wear my mom’s burnt orange mini dress which she wore back in the
day. Now I just need to get those white
boots that were made for walking!

And what about the wrap dress? Diane von Furstenberg invented the wrap dress
in the mid 70’s. The wrap dress reached
its peek popularity in 1976 when every fashion magazine was scattered with
famous women in wrap dresses. What is the go-to dress for ladies in today’s
world whom want to look great but still get the job done? Wrap dresses! The wrap dress is simply everlasting as my mother in her 60’s could wear
it with just as much style as my youngest cousin in her early 20’s. This would also be the second time my mother
in all her beauty would sport the wrap dress in her lifetime.

There are numerous other fashion myths that I have not
and will not abide by. I have made it my
mission to seek, expose, and destroy these confines of creativity. It started with “Pre-emptive White Pants
Wednesday,” though will continue through my daily attire choices. From this day forward I will live with
fashion conviction!

VIVA LAS REVOLUCIONES!

Black and brown together? I sorta believe in that fashion no-no.

Not to totally disagree with you. Some people can pull it off, and I’m certain you can, but in my experience most end up looking like either a walking Guiness Black and Tan or a Rottweiler.

Pre-emptive white pants Wednesday Part 1: The Mission

March 7, 2007 marks the first strike against one of the
unwritten though commonly known rules of the world. On Tuesday, March 6 2007, I received a very
important email consisting of an appointment card of the highest degree. This appointment went to a select few within
my 100 employee company, as only a few of us are trained enough, strong enough,
and independent enough to be given this daunting task of extreme risk. Yes, there are only a few of us who would
accept such a challenge, knowing the aftermath might be detrimental. We had little time to prepare for our
mission as this task was to take place the next day. Our concerns were great and at times
overwhelming, but we proceeded with style, panache, and determination in our veins. Yes, March 7, 2007 will go down
in history as the day we wore white pants before Memorial Day. GASP!!!

It’s okay, it’s okay! We made it out alright, worked our white pants and still had a sense of
fashion dignity. What prompted such a
direct assault on the conformity of couture? Maybe it was the four days of 60+ and sunny which preceded such an
action, with the birds singing in the morning dew and the ceremonial hanging of
the down coat in the off-season closet making us believe that spring was upon
us and therefore summer was near. Of
course it rained the day that was donned with white pants, though I took the
blackened rain splatters with pride as it was a testament to the notion of
stepping out.

Who created these rules and why do we adhere to
them? Well, maybe it is the whole ‘white
pants + dirty winter streets = gray pants’ equation which I learned about on
that monumental day. Though I live in Portland, Oregon; Los Angeles does not
receive such messy winter weather so I don’t buy this fashion social norm as
weather dependent.

This insubordinate behavior made me start thinking about
all the other fashion rules which I have been living under with out
questioning. Come on! I am a part of generation ‘X’; the generation
that questioned everything and did not believe a word as truth until we figured
it for ourselves! Self knowledge is the
pillar and acting independently is the foundation of my beloved
generation. This blind faith attitude
towards fashion is a complete disservice to the very decades from which I was
raised! How could I after all these
years? Shame hath no mercy.

Tune into the next contribution for the dismantling and
denying of such fashion folklore that makes me cringe at the simple thought of
actually abiding by such ridiculous idiosyncrasies. Until next time!

I thought it was white shoes after Labor Day. Or maybe it was no shoes for the Labour Party… I can’t remember.

White pants can be good though, in any weather. Just go to any capoeira roda and you’ll see what I mean.
